SCVHS Fall Member Meet & Greet, "Letters From Canoa"

The Historic Canoa Ranch is a Santa Cruz Valley gem and a perfect place for our Member Meet & Greet.

SCVHS members are invited to join us as we embark on a private walking tour of the Ranch which includes the headquarters, historic buildings and corrals. There will be an opportunity to view the “People of Canoa” exhibits and enjoy a garden tour which will culminate in the Manning Jr. Residence where Ann Manning Fiegen, daughter of Deezie Lewis Manning and Howell Manning Jr., and her husband Jim Fiegen will provide us with a firsthand glimpse into Canoa Ranch life between 1948 and 1955.

Ann and Jim will share excerpts from letters written by Deezie to her mother, Bertha Harsch Lewis, in Waverly, Pennsylvania, describing Howell Jr. and Deezie’s day to day life on a working cattle ranch. The presentation, including related photographs, will explore Deezie’s role as a young bride in a new home and includes observations about the surrounding area, weather and her new garden.
