About the event

Traveling the Camino de Santiago, with Dr. Cristina Ortiz
The Camino de Santiago is the most famous pilgrimage in the world. It consists of an extensive network of ancient routes stretching across Europe and coming together at the tomb of St. James (Santiago in Spanish) in Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. Many people set out on the Camino as a spiritual journey, while others are drawn by the challenge of a long trek through beautiful countryside, seeking an individual or communal experience shared by pilgrims for centuries.

In this public event, Dr. Cristina Ortiz will speak of the history of the Camino and share photographs of her own experience walking it in 2024. She will also discuss ways in which students and community members can journey to Spain and walk the Camino themselves, perhaps through a university and Mauthe sponsored program in the summer of 2026!

Cristina Ortiz Ceberio was born in San Sebastián. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities obtained at the University of the Basque Country (San Sebastián) and a PhD in Romance Languages and Literatures from the University of Cincinnati (Ohio, USA). She is a Professor in the Department of Humanistic Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where she teaches interdisciplinary courses on contemporary culture, on Spanish language and on literatures written in Spanish. Her most recent publication includes Ellas Cuentan: Representaciones artísticas de la violencia en el País Vasco desde la perspectiva de género (Madrid: Dykinson, 2020), co-authored with Prof. Maria Pilar Rodriguez from the University of the Deusto Country, as well as numerous articles on literature and cinema from the Spanish-speaking world from the optics of genre. Dr. Ortiz is also an Affiliate Faculty member at the Mauthe Center.

This event is sponsored by the Mauthe Center, and it is free and open to the public.
