An Evening with the Keeper: Stories, Stones & Spirits of Dode
🗓️ Sunday 31st August, 7:00pm
📍 The Lost Village of Dode, Great Buckland
Have you ever felt the quiet pull of ancient stones, or wondered what secrets lie buried beneath Dode’s hallowed earth?
If you’ve not yet joined one of our Keeper’s Talks, now is the time. On Sunday 31st August, the inimitable Keeper Doug invites you to step back in time and walk the winding path through The Lost Village’s vast and extraordinary past.
Dode, it is said, was built around the year 1100 by Bishop Gundulf – the Norman architect of Colchester Castle and the Tower of London itself. A trusted confidant of William the Conqueror, Gundulf’s name echoes through time... and perhaps, through legend too.
For those with a literary heart, there’s a tantalising link to J.R.R. Tolkien – who, as a scholar of Anglo-Saxon history, would have known Gundulf’s tale well. Could it be more than mere coincidence that Gandalf, the most storied wizard of all, bears such a similar name to the builder of Dode? And with Tolkien’s own “Two Towers” – might the echoes of Dode’s stones have found their way into Middle-earth?
But it is not only history we will speak of...
There are whispers too – of the mystical, the mysterious – including the haunting tale of the Dode Child who is said still to roam these grounds.
Join us for an unforgettable evening of storytelling, local legend, and candlelit wonder.
🎟️ Tickets £5 – with all proceeds going to our chosen charity, St Benedict’s Church.
