Timba is a high-energy, rhythmically complex, and deeply expressive genre of Cuban popular music that blends Cuban son, salsa, funk, Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz, and R&B. Born in the streets and clubs of Havana in the 1990s, Timba is known for its explosive intensity, sharp rhythm breaks (called “bloques”), dynamic shifts (“gears”), and powerful groove that pushes dancers to listen, feel, and interpret the music in real time.
In dance, Timba encourages freedom, attitude, and individual expression. It's not just about following steps—it’s about feeling the music, playing with the rhythm, and reacting to its surprises. Dancers often mix elements of salsa, rumba, Afro-Cuban movement, and even hip hop, creating a fluid and personal style that evolves with the music.
Unlike traditional salsa, Timba isn't predictable—and that's what makes it so exciting.
