Botanical Drawing Workshop Hosted By Amanda Seckington
This drawing workshop is aimed to be a low-pressure session for beginner-intermediate skills levels, age 14+ that will allow you to create expressive drawings of plants while strengthening your marking-making and hand-eye coordination. The workshop will begin with a drawing demonstration from hosting artist Amanda Seckington, me. I will guide you through the basic elements of life-drawing, including tips on creating interesting compositions and how to achieve dynamic linework.
Then you will be set out in the garden to create your sketches. I will be walking around to give real-time feedback and pointers. We will start with pencil sketching in the front of the garden and then use more color for the second part of our drawing session in the back of the property. At the end we will have a 20-30 min gathering where participants are welcome to share their sketches for the day and just mingle for a bit. Class time runs from 12:30-3:00. Please arrive 15 mins early as the garden has limited parking and overflow is across the street.
I will provide pencils but the following supplies are required:
-The largest sketchbook you can hold comfortably in your lap. This is what I recommend.
But any medium-large sketchbook will do ($8).
-A pencil sharpener.
-A foldable/portable chair, or a mat, or a small blanket, whatever you feel comfortable with and is easy enough to move around often.
About the Artist:
Amanda Seckington
I have been dedicated to my art practice since I found painting as a therapeutic outlet when I was 16 years old. I graduated from the Ringling College of Art & Design with a BFA in 2010. After graduation, I was asked to teach at the Teen Studios summer program on campus and immediately found the experience to be rewarding. Since then I have taught as both a private art teacher and a public school visual arts teacher for grades 6-12. As a collector of odd jobs and freelance projects to keep the lights on, and continually developing my personal art practice and interests, I have come to be acquainted with many varying artistic techniques and mediums. Some of these include painting, drawing, sewing, digital media, photography, package-design, clay, jewelry, scenic art/set painting and most recently I have been learning stained-glass.
