Hankley Common is a sandy area so we should be free of mud for this one. We haven’t been here since January 2024 so it feels like a visit is overdue.
ABOUT
This will be a loop at Hankley Common from the big top car park. We can either do one of the usual routes that we have done before - and see the Atlantic Wall reconstruction - or, if you're not fussed about that, we can mix things up a bit and go another way. Either way, we're looking at a loop of about 2.5 miles with a couple of slopes. While not muddy, things can be uneven underfoot, particularly on the slopes, and there can be surface water on paths so sturdy footwear is a MUST.

Park in the big 'top' car park up the MOD access lane, which comes off the sharp reverse s-bend on Thursley Road opposite a red and white sign for Hankley Training Area. Great news - the worst part of the lane has been resurfaced so enjoy the smooth tarmac that’s replaced the pot holes of yesteryear.
If the car park is rammo, you can also park on the track leading up to it.
Meet on the steps at the rear of the car park behind the poo bins.

More directions:
• If your sat nav brings you through the small village of THURSLEY (passing the Three Horseshoes pub and a cricket green), you'll continue along the small windy lane that is Dyehouse Road and at the top of this, you will turn RIGHT onto Thursley Road. Drive down Thursley Road until ahead you see the road bend to the right. On this bend, you will see a small road/track on the LEFT opposite the white and red sign for Hankley Training Area. Follow it all the way up to the end, where there is a metal barrier across the way and you'll see large metal gates and an entrance to the large car park.
• If you are coming down Thursley Road FROM ELSTEAD VILLAGE, drive PAST The Moat Car Park (this will be on your left) and shortly after, you will come to a sharp S bend in the road. First, it will go round to the right and, as it then turns to the left, you will see a small road/track coming off on the RIGHT, opposite the white and red sign for Hankley Training Area. Follow it all the way up to the end, where there is a metal barrier across the way and you'll see large metal gates and an entrance to the large car park.

1. Dogs must be kept on lead and under control (if your dog needs a muzzle, use it)
2. Deal with dog poo appropriately - bag it and bin it/take it home or stick'n'flick if there is foliage alongside the path into which it is suitable to do so
