Join us for a deep dive into a single piece from the Collection with a CAM Docent, Miriam Weinstein. Begin with conversation, a short presentation, and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Center, then move to the James Center to view the original.
Learn about American artist John Sloan and his transformative summers in Gloucester. Between 1914 and 1918, Sloan—already a leading figure in the Ashcan School—found fresh inspiration along Cape Ann’s rugged shores and vibrant harbors, producing nearly 300 works that captured the essence of Gloucester’s landscapes and daily life. From the moody moors of Dogtown to the bustling trolley lines of Main Street, Sloan’s paintings reflect not only his evolving color philosophy and compositional daring, but also a deep emotional connection to the region. Join this week’s Coffee and Conversations as we explore how Cape Ann shaped his artistic legacy and left an indelible mark on American realism.
