Cape Ann Shakespeare Troupe (CAST) is a non-profit community theatre group devoted to works of Shakespeare & other notable playwrights. CAST programs are funded in part by a grant from the Gloucester Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
The Two Gentlemen of Verona is one of William Shakespeare’s earliest comedies, likely written in the early 1590s. The play explores themes of friendship, love, betrayal, and forgiveness. It follows two close friends, Valentine and Proteus, who travel from Verona to Milan, where both become entangled in romantic pursuits. Valentine falls for Silvia, the daughter of the Duke of Milan, while Proteus, already pledged to his beloved Julia back in Verona, betrays both Valentine and Julia by pursuing Silvia himself.
The play features disguises, mistaken loyalties, and a famous band-of-outlaws subplot. Julia, disguised as a page, follows Proteus to Milan and witnesses his betrayal. Ultimately, reconciliation and forgiveness prevail, with Valentine restored to Silvia and Julia reunited with Proteus.
