DELIA DERBYSHIRE & THE BBC RADIOPHONIC WORKSHOP
Thursday 13th November
Glossop Labour Club, 8-11pm
FREE ADMISSION
We’re back at Glossop Labour Club on Thursday 13 November when we’ll be exploring the groundbreaking work of electronic music composer Delia Derbyshire and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
Glossop-based sound artist @claresavory will lead the session, taking in well-known and more obscure pieces composed for radio and television by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, including an early collaboration with producer George Martin. However, the main focus will be on the work of Delia Derbyshire, including the experimental cult classic ‘An Electric Storm’ by White Noise.
Clare writes:
“Best known for her uncredited work on the first rendition of the Doctor Who theme tune, Delia Derbyshire was a radical pioneer with her music concrete style of sampling and manipulating using early Modular synth systems and splicing tape loops.
As part of the session, we’ll playing part of one of the rarest long form releases of her work: Inventions for Radio.
It was wild at its time when first aired on BBC radio in the mid 1960s. A haunted soundscaped vox pop of very ordinary people (not classic RP accents!) talking about ordinary things like dreams and what they believe the after life looks like. Listeners complained in their droves that they couldn’t understand the accents or what these ‘common’ people were saying!
Combining and crafting soundscapes with speech is what I do for a day job but it’s brilliant to imagine just how revolutionary this art form must have been when it first came out.”
Clare will have a wobbulator on hand (one of Delia’s trusty sound manipulation tools) and there will also be a tape loop demonstration. What could go wrong?!
Doors 8pm. The sounds start at 8.30. See you there.
