Next Zoo Protest: SUNDAY, Oct 19 from 10 to noon
What is going on at the Los Angeles Zoo? To the consternation of the public and city officials, it shipped its last two elephants, Billy and Tina, to another zoo instead of to a sanctuary last spring. The zoo's fund raising nonprofit has cuts ties with it, claiming misuse of funds by the zoo director Denise Verret. As a result, the zoo's big money generating events like the Beastly Ball and Zoo Nights were all cancelled. Patrons report dilapidated exhibits and missing or depressed animals. A recent photo shows one of the many empty exhibits.
Zoos which exhibit living non-indigenous animals like elephants, giraffes, big cats and apes in cramped, unnatural enclosures for public "entertainment" should be consigned to bad ideas of the past. We are asking the zoo to consider alternative ways of being that utilize modern technology like animatronic animals and/or concentrate on true rescue and rehabiliitation conservation efforts. We are demanding the zoo never subject elephants to the mind-destroying captivity Billy and Tina endured and that Verret figures out a way to get them out of the Tulsa Zoo and into a sanctuary where they should already be.
From the looks of it the zoo seems to be in a state of crisis. Join us as we continue being part of their crisis.
