Time Travelling Carpenter - Timber Framed Buildings

Many medieval buildings were of timber framed construction. In this activity, Jeff the Time Travelling Carpenter will be presenting an oak model of a timber framed stone mason’s lodge – very much in the style of the type that the masons would have used as a workshop for a building project at the Abbey.

Ingeniously held together by pegged mortice and tenon joints you will have the opportunity to take it apart and rebuild it to help understand and marvel at medieval construction ingenuity.

Additionally, there will be some interpretation items for Abbey visitors to handle and a few examples of authentically reconstructed tools of the medieval carpenter.

Jeff Loader is an experienced craftsman and combines his craft knowledge and skills with his passion for history to present demonstrations and activities for all to enjoy.

Every Monday in August Jeff will be onsite between 1pm and 4pm demonstrating a different medieval craft or activity. Visit our websites 'What's on' section for more information.

This session is included in your abbey admission.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.
