Minidoka Swing Band Remembering Music from WWII Japanese American Internment Camps

The Gladstone Community Center, City of Gladstone, and the Gladstone Seniors Foundation have invited the Minidoka Swing Band to perform on Saturday, October 25, at 2:00 pm in the Gladstone High School auditorium.

The Minidoka Swing Band honors the Japanese Americans who were interned behind barbed wire during WWII, offering big band sounds from the 1930s, 1940s, and beyond. The band’s name is derived from the Minidoka Internment Camp near Twin Falls, Idaho, one of ten major camps where Japanese Americans from Portland and Washington State were imprisoned without due process by the U.S. government. To provide a sense of normalcy for the teenagers and young adults, the camps often organized Saturday night dances to make the best of a horrific situation.

The Minidoka Swing Band was formed in 2007 to remember the music and big bands that were popular inside WWII Japanese American Internment camps and help make life more normal for the imprisoned internees.
