Baroque can be seen as the first truly enduring “trend” in music — one that has passed through centuries, transformed yet instantly recognizable in its forms, dances, portraits, and its unique blend of refinement and theatricality.
We often think of Baroque as elegance, order, and musical comfort. But when this style first appeared, it shocked its audience. “Too much!” cried 18th-century critics, calling it excessive, distorted, even tasteless. The very word baroque once meant a flawed pearl.
And yet, this extravagant, emotional, and theatrical music has not only survived - it has become timeless. For over 300 years, composers have returned to its spirit, shapes, and gestures, each time transforming it anew.
This program spans nearly three hundred years of the “Baroque code”: as a kind of musical runway show:
You'll hear how Baroque style has changed - from Rameau’s refined dances to Suites by Ravel and Stravinsky, portraits and dances, the traditional heart of Baroque suites, reimagined in the 20th century; Penderecki’s tragic Chaconne and Miguel del Águila’s explosive Barroqueada.
