Join the Iowa Chapter of BHA this month for Public Lands Month and help to remove fencing located at Soper's Mill "North" near Ames on Sept.20th. Removing this fence will mitigate hazards for working dogs and hunters, we well as allowing wildlife to travel more freely. BHA began helping Story County Conservation in 2023 and continues to partner with the agency to improve access.
Roughly 70 acres of public hunting grounds border the Skunk River near the site of the historic Soper’s Mill. As multiple small land acquisitions have taken place over the decades, the property boundaries have changed, leaving old, inoperative fence lines behind to confuse today’s hunters. Removing this fence make public property boundaries clearer to hunters while also mitigating hazards for both working dogs and hunters.
The South Skunk River Greenbelt includes a corridor of roughly 1,000 acres of riparian forest, oxbows, wetlands, and other essential habitat along the Skunk River from Ames northward to Story City. It’s a “green wooded ribbon in a sea of agriculture,” and provides valuable recreational opportunities including hiking, birdwatching, equestrian, mountain biking, and especially hunting and trapping.
