Raise your own Luna Moth caterpillars

Here's an opportunity to help the declining wild population of the native Luna Moth, while also experiencing an intimate connection to its life cycle. All you need is access to walnut or hickory tree leaves.

Join us for an encore presentation about the Luna moth with Jim McGrath of Nature Discovery, one of the largest home-based nature centers in Michigan.

The Luna, a beautiful member of the giant silk moth family, is a native Michigan species whose wild population is in decline. Following an informative PowerPoint presentation, "The Luna Moth's Life Cycle & Ecology," each adult/couple/family in attendance will receive a few young larvae to take home and raise.

The larvae (caterpillars) will spin cocoons before the end of September. When the the new Lunas emerge in the spring, you will release them into the wild, where they can breed and start the cycle all over.

Detailed care instructions will be provided. Please bring a small, clean, dry jar to transport your caterpillars.
