Dr. Kevin Folta is a Professor in the Horticultural Sciences Department at the University of Florida. His research examines a broad set of topics including the role of specific light wavelengths controlling plant development to how specific genes influence strawberry flavor and aroma. He has been recognized with numerous awards in research and science communication, including the CAST Borlaug Award in Agricultural Communications. He also helps his wife farm fruit, vegetables, chickens and pigs near Archer, FL, and he’s at Haile Farmers Market every Saturday.
Description of talk:
Humans have been changing plant genetics for almost 20,000 years. Today we can do it with great precision and speed. This presentation covers the range of genetic improvement techniques, explores each of their strengths and weaknesses, risks and benefits. We need to feed more people, do it on less space, and with less impact on the planet, and new varieties will be part of the solution. In a time of confusing claims and accelerating new technologies, this presentation will answer your questions about crop genetics and how scientists develop the next round of new varieties.
We meet in person the 3rd Monday of every month 6:30 pm at VFW 2811 on Waldo Rd. Grow Gainesville (GG) is ALWAYS FREE: free meetings, free plants, free seeds...
