Event Summary

Registration & Fees
- Early (online): $20 per player (EventBrite/PayPal)
- Late (onsite): $25 per player (PayPal/Venmo/Cash)
- Free Entry: Players with a current USCF rating over 2000—fee is deducted from winnings.
Schedule & Format
- Start Time: Round 1 kicks off at 11:00 AM sharp. Early check‑in recommended: before 10:45 for online registrants or before 10:30 for onsite.
- Finish Times: Most sections conclude around 7:00 PM; novice sections may wrap up earlier. Awards follow shortly after each section ends.
Sections & Time Controls
There are 3 rated sections and 1 unrated section:
Open Championship:
Rating above 1300 or top players below 1300 if <8), 4 Rounds, G45; d5
Reserve:
Rating 950–1300, 4 Rounds, G/45; d5
Novice A:
Rating 350–800, 5 Rounds, G/30;d5
Unrated:
No Rating, 5 Rounds, G/30; d5
- EXCEPTIONS FOR PROVISIONALLY RATED PLAYERS: Adult players with provisional ratings below 750 may choose to play up into a Reserve section, but they may also register for the novice section that matches their provisional rating. Scholastic players with provisional ratings may be placed in an appropriate section by the tournament director
- NOTE ABOUT PLAYERS' SECTION PLACEMENT: At the TD's discretion, sections may be added, deleted, or combined. A player near the rating cut-off may be moved to maintain an even number of players in as many sections as possible. Also, at the TD's discretion, section rating ranges may be revised onsite based on natural breaks in rating distributions, which could increase the number of players in the Open Championship section to more than 8.
- RATING DETERMINATION: USCF ratings as of November 7, 2025 will be used to determine section eligibility for this event.
Prizes & Rules
- Cash for Championship & Reserve: Prize funds are based on attendance. e.g., $350 guaranteed for 50 players.
- Novice & Unrated Awards: Top 3 trophies and medals for tied third-place finishers. Tie‑breaks follow standard USCF rules.
Additional Info
- Equipment Provided: Chess sets and notation supplies are furnished. Clocks are limited—bringing your own is encouraged.
- Pairings: Swiss-style pairings posted 5 minutes after the last game ends; next round starts 10 minutes later, allowing a brief break.
- Photography: Photos may be taken and used for promotional purposes by the Shenandoah Valley Chess Club.
- Upon pre-registration, expect an email with further details.
