Fresh off tours across the USA, Europe, and Australia, Martha Spencer brings the high-energy spirit and deep musical roots of the Blue Ridge to Fries. She has appeared at major venues and festivals including the Topanga Banjo Fiddle Festival, Westport Folk & Bluegrass Festival, The Buck Owens Crystal Palace, Ashkenaz Center, the Oklahoma Banjo Museum, and Song of the Mountains on PBS.
Raised in the heart of the Whitetop Mountain music tradition, Martha grew up surrounded by the sound of her father’s old-time fiddle and her mother’s clawhammer banjo in the Whitetop Mountain Band. Her uncle, renowned fiddler and luthier Albert Hash, and her cousin Ola Belle Reed (writer of “High On the Mountain”) shaped the musical landscape that continues to define her performances today. Expect fiery fiddle tunes, driving banjo, soulful traditional songs, and Martha’s signature flatfoot dancing.
She is joined by Lucas Pasley, a powerful musician deeply rooted in old-time traditions. A great-nephew of Red Fox Chasers fiddler Guy Brooks, Lucas learned from masters like Joe Birchfield of the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers and has spent decades teaching, performing, and preserving the music of Alleghany County and the surrounding region. Together, Martha and Lucas bring the living tradition of Appalachian music to vibrant life.
