About the event

Small Changes, Big Results: Understanding Substance Use in the Family
This workshop will help you understand challenging behaviors, strategies for collaboration, new communication skills, and self-compassion.

About this Event

Relationships where high-risk behaviors, mental health issues and substance use are present can feel like navigating a minefield. When communication breaks down, harsh words are exchanged, and you feel like you are on the verge of risking your relationship, you think there has to be a better way (and there is).

Small changes CAN produce big results for you and your loved one(s) struggling with these tough situations.

In this interactive workshop informed by the CRAFT* approach, we'll help you understand what these changes look like and work with you to develop and improve your communication and collaboration skills with your loved one. You'll learn how to activate recovery in your family and communities and start changing the dynamics in your relationships.

What you will learn:
    • Defining why our loved one's behaviors make sense
    • Understanding the solution of substances in your loved one's lives
    • Creating a safe emotional environment in the home to reduce risk factors
    • Increasing protective factors to prevent further escellation of substance use
    • Living out our own personal values regardless of our circumstances
    • Setting healthy boundaries and limits so we can respond with compassion
    • Actionable solutions that can change your family dynamic right away

This workshop takes place from 5:30 - 8:0 PM Central Time. Refreshments and a light dinner will be served. The information presented in this workshop is informed by the following evidence-based best practices and treatments: CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training), MI (Motivational Interviewing), and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy).

*About CRAFT: Community Reinforcement and Family Training, or CRAFT, is an approach for families who have a loved one struggling with substances, that invites change and assists in moving someone towards seeking help. CRAFT is about learning a different method to communicate with and support your loved one. It’s about taking care of yourself, while also learning how to interact with your loved one in a way that increases the likelihood of making a real change.
