In November (the day after Halloween), we’ll screen the classic “Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”! Directed by Robert Wiene in 1920, “Caligari” is widely considered to be the quintessential work of early German Expressionist cinema: The film features a dark, twisted visual style, with sharp-pointed forms; oblique, curving lines; structures and landscapes that lean and twist in unusual angles; and shadows and streaks of light painted directly onto the sets.
You’ve probably seen images from this movie, but perhaps never actually watched it in its entirety. Well, we’ll have a pristine restoration print of the film ready for you, accompanied by live piano music from Nate Butler!
