Tony Award-winning star of stage and screen John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Shortbus, How to Talk to Girls At Parties), one of alt-culture’s boldest creators, brings an exclusive evening of hilarious, poignant songs and stories from his unparalleled career spanning off-Broadway, Broadway, and beyond.

This performance is part of a series curated by Joseph Keckler, a musician, writer, and songwriter, known as one of New York’s most notorious performers. Applauded by the New York Times as a “major vocal talent with a range that shatters conventional boundaries… and a trickster’s dark wit,” he performs bizarrely heroic operatic arias that employ his astonishing vocal range to tell poignant, vulnerable, and incendiary stories. Joseph is also host of Joseph Keckler's Golden Hour at ArtYard, bringing together groundbreaking and original artists performing in an inviting variety show format.
John Cameron Mitchell directed, starred in, and wrote, with Stephen Trask, the film Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001), for which he won Best Director at the Sundance Festival and was nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Actor. His recent Broadway production of Hedwig garnered him Tony Awards for his performance and for Best Revival. He won an Obie Award for Hedwig Off-Broadway as well for as starring in Larry Kramer’s The Destiny of Me. He directed Tennessee Williams’ Kingdom of Earth Off-Broadway with Cynthia Nixon and Peter Sarsgaard. He directed the films Shortbus (2006), Rabbit Hole (2010) and How to Talk to Girls at Parties (2018) both starring Nicole Kidman who was nominated for Best Actress Oscar for the former. Recent TV roles include Hulu’s Shrill, HBO’s Girls and Vinyl, CBS’s The Good Fight, and Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle. He stars in, wrote (with Bryan Weller) and directed the musical podcast series Anthem: Homunculus featuring Cynthia Erivo, Glenn Close, Patti Lupone, Denis O’Hare, Laurie Anderson and Marion Cotillard, which is playing on Luminary podcast platform, and the newly released Cancellation Island. Recent TV projects include the series Joe Exotic with co-star Kate McKinnon for NBC/Universal and featured roles on The Sandman and City on Fire.

He was shortlisted for an Oscar nomination and won best picture at the Cinema Eye Awards this year for Sam Green’s 32 Sounds with music by JD Samson, and will premiere Sufjan Stevens & Justin Peck’s Illinoise on Broadway at the St. James Theater in April. His past work includes projects with Kaneza Schaal, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Peter Brook, Daniel Fish, Victoria Thiérrée-Chaplin, Yael Farber, Anna Deavere Smith, Annie-B Parson & Paul Lazar, Jessica Blank & Erik Jensen, Peter Sellars, Julie Taymor, and John Cameron Mitchell. Recent premieres include 600 Hhighwaymen's A Thousand Ways, nora chipaumire’s Nehanda, Bryce Dessner’s Triptych (Eyes of One on Another) directed by Kaneza Schaal, John Cameron Mitchell’s The Origin of Love, Kaneza Schaal & Christopher Myers’ Cartography, Sam Green & Kronos Quartet’s A Thousand Thoughts, Big Dance Theater / Mikhail Baryshnikov’s Man in a Case, Toshi & Bernice Johnson Reagon’s Parable of the Sower and Nalaga’at Deaf-Blind Theater’s Not by Bread Alone. Ongoing collaborations include Milo Rau, Bryce Dessner, Sophia Brous, 600 Highwaymen, Sam Green, Timothy White Eagle, Andrew Schneider, Big Dance Theater, John Cameron Mitchell and Compagnia T.P.O. He recently produced the first citywide festival edition of the Under the Radar and planning the festival’s 20th Edition in 2025. Premieres include Sufjan Stevens & Justin Peck’s Illinoise, Ocean Vuong; Bryce Dessner & Kaneza Schaal’s Night Sky with Exit Wounds, Sam Green’s Untitled Trees Documentary Project, and Penny Arcade’s autobiographical epic The Art of Becoming.
