"Labor: Appreciation Day!"
Come early to find your spot on the grass; bring camp chair & picnic lunch!
Great Speakers! Fun Music!
** George Heartwell, 3 term Mayor of Grand Rapids, will be our MC and will bring his experience and insightful reflections to this event.
** Our workforce in this agricultural region, and the frightening challenges they currently face, will be addressed by two women with migrant family and service backgrounds:
Speakers Elvira Hernandez and Florencia Colella
* Elvira Hernandez is with West MI ACLU and has has worked at Farmworker Legal Services and Hispanic Center of Western Michigan, serving immigrants from around the world with consultations, family reunifications, naturalizations, and more.**
* Florencia Colella grew up in a family of farmers, butchers, accountants and entrepreneurs who migrated across rural and urban European and Latin American regions. She works to empower agribusinesses to make decisions through an improved understanding of their financial wellbeing and its interconnectedness with the community and the environment.
DONATIONS OF GOODS & CASH NEEDED for our Local Migrant Farmworkers!
Please Bring Donations Items in bags and boxes:
** Sun hats, sunglasses and sunscreen; any personal hygiene and toiletry items; work shoes for both men and women of various sizes; long and cool t-shirts for men and women; cooling towels; children’s clothing; twin bed sheets, as many farmworkers arrive with nothing and they are not provided with basic living supplies at their work sites; and any similar NEW items (not used).
**Donations will be distrubuted by Migrant Legal Aid, a non-profit law firm in Grand Rapids that offers pro-bono services to migrant farmworkers in the West Michigan agricultural sector. They are the only law firm in the State that provides outreach to migrant farmworkers at their work-housing sites, and travel to camps twice a week during the growing season, including to Newaygo County and region.
Cash donations will be gratefully accepted, and QR codes for credit card donations will be available also.
** Get ready to "rock the casbah" with the "Muskegon River Raging Grannies"!
This recently formed gaggle of local grannies will perform songs of well-known melodies but with new lyrics that fit the times. The original “Raging Grannies” hail from Canada, but they urge Grannies from across the globe to become “Raging” by going out into the streets promoting peace, justice, social and economic equality through song and humor.
** Our "Fine Feathered Friends" band members (Steve, Tom and Patrick) will walk us in and out of the event with rockin' music of mixed genres & originals.
Join us September 1 for an informative, service oriented, and fun day! Indivisible - Newaygo County!
