International Webinar: Digestate for healthy soils

In light of the International Soil Day, we want to explore the question of how digestate contribute to healthy soils. The international webinar will outline the legal requirements for healthy soil, particularly from a European perspective, and further evaluate the influence of digestate on healthy soil.
In the first presentation, Lucile Sever from the European Biogas Association will outline the opportunities and obstacles arising from the European legal framework for digestate in Europe. Among other things, she will discuss the Waste Framework Directive, the Animal By-products Regulation, the Nitrates Directive and the Sewage Sludge Directive. The focus will be on how these various legal acts influence the use and management of digestate and therefore the preservation and development of healthy soils.
In the second presentation, Dr. Else Bünemann-König of the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL will present the results of the research project "Optimization of nitrogen utilization and climate impact of recycled fertilizers in organic farming.” This comprehensive study on the agronomic value and management of digestate from Swiss biogas plants shows how the benefits of by-products from biogas production can be exploited while minimizing compromises in terms of nutrient losses and soil quality.
