With The Invention of Tradition, Felis Dos invites the viewer into a space of reflection, based on a Brazilian past and a Danish present informed by religion, tradition, breaking with tradition and moments of chance leading to new realities.
The exhibited works are explorations of life in all its forms juxtaposing a religious Brazilian existence to the lives that are and have been lived in Skagen. Orishas unknown to the Western world and famously depicted fishermen are woven together in Dos’ paintings bringing familiarity to the unknown and allowing for a universal questioning of ones existence.
Through this body of work, Skagen becomes a site of weaving; where inherited histories meet lived experience, where resistance becomes invention, and where the sacred travels freely.
The Invention of Tradition is not a conclusion but an opening: a room for doubt and possibility, for randomness and destiny, for the viewer to bring their own memories, questions, and ghosts.
Felis Dos (Brazil, 1992) cultivates a distinctive perspective shaped by faith, class consciousness, and spirituality. His exploration of identity and marginal reflections fosters a profound engagement with the ontological process of inquiry: "Who am I? Who defines my essence?" As an "image maker," Felis channels these reflections into a dynamic artistic practice, using painting to forge essential images and universes that challenge viewers to confront ambiguity while engaging with trauma, dreams, and fragmented realities.
With a strong philosophical foundation, Dos aims to evoke uncertainty and foster introspection, crafting immersive spaces for deconstruction and reconstruction. Since 2018, Felis has resided and worked in Denmark, navigating the complexities of contemporary existence.
