Once again we spice up the the Midweek Social at Happy Feet Studio with the first half hour being a time to come together and explore the history of jazz dance and music.
This time we will deep dive into the rhythms, structures and soul of jazz through a selection of video clips from Wynton Marsalis’s lecture series at Harvard University. The lectures include both interesting information and fantastic music! As swing dancers, understanding the essence of the dance isn't just about the steps. It's about the history, the feeling, and the culture that shapes every beat we dance to.
The clips chosen for the evening will include topics like:
- A breakdown of the African 6/8 rhythm and its transformation into the American shuffle.
- A breakdown of the roles and responsibilities of each member of the rhythm section and how that makes the music swing.
Who is Wynton Marsalis?
Wynton Marsalis is one of the most celebrated jazz musicians and educators of our time. A trumpeter, composer, and bandleader, Marsalis is a leading figure in the jazz world and the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. His work spans across performance, education, and the preservation of jazz’s rich history.
The music in the videos we will show is played by Marsalis on the trumpet accompanied by:
Mark O’Connor - fiddle
Walter Blanding - reeds
James Chirillo - guitar
Dan Nimmer - piano
Carlos Henriquez - bass
Ali Jackson - drums
The evening's host, Monica Blair, will also lead a short discussion after the video screening. And afterwards, the floor comes alive! We we will transition into our Midweek Social, a social dance evening to the swing tunes played by DJ Gosia 🎵
