MUSIC AND INDIVIDUALS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENTS
Developing and exploring music training, concert experiences
and multimodal approaches for users of hearing aids and cochlear implants.
Introduction:
Music has always been a fundamental part of human life. From the earliest traces of humankind up until the arrival of recording technology in the late 19th century, music was experienced primarily as a live, multisensory, and social activity. Yet for individuals with hearing impairments, significant barriers remain that limit full access to and participation in musical experiences. My research explores ways to enhance music perception and concert experiences for this group, drawing on my background in sound engineering and music production. What began as an interest in sound processing and composition evolved into a broader project that bridges artistic practice and music teaching with hearing research and user experience. Through collaborative work, music training, concert organization, and live performance, nearly 500 participants engaged with the project. This thesis, presented through six research articles, focuses on music training and concert experiences for individuals with hearing impairments, supported by multimodal strategies including haptics, visualization, and immersive audio. This cross-disciplinary approach demonstrates both the societal relevance and practical potential of making music more accessible for all.
