What Is Bone Broth and Why Does It Matter?
First, let’s get a little clarity on what bone broth is and why you should care. Bone broth is not the same as a quick broth made by simmering meat or vegetables for a short time. Rather, it’s closer to a deeply rendered stock, made by cooking bones (often with connective tissue and cartilage) in water. You might add a little vinegar or acid to pull minerals out. You can also drop in some aromatics for flavor.

It’s a pretty lengthy process, too. Simmer times vary by recipe, but they usually range from 12 to 24 hours. This lets more nutrients, collagen, gelatin, and minerals to leach into the liquid.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the potential benefits of bone broth.

1. Protein, Amino Acids, and Building Blocks for the Body
2. Gut Health and Digestive Support
3. Joint, Bone, and Connective Tissue Support
4. Hydration and Electrolytes
Among the more alluring benefits attributed to broth are improved skin elasticity, better sleep, and even enhanced mood or cognitive clarity.

Because collagen (and the amino acids that come from it) plays such an important role in skin, hair, and connective tissues, some people believe regular broth consumption can maintain skin tone and reduce signs of aging.

Others highlight amino acids like glycine as calming, possibly helping with sleep or stress. For example, some people say that sipping warm broth at bedtime can soothe the nervous system.
