Clinical Strategies for Enhanced Oral Health Care of Patients with Special Health Care Needs and the Aging Population

Course Description
This one-day interactive course is designed for dental professionals interested in expanding their care for patients with special healthcare needs (SHCN) and geriatric populations. Participants will engage in lecture-based learning and hands-on activities, including immersive virtual reality simulations, to explore the clinical, behavioral, and sensory challenges faced by these patient populations. The course features a panel of experienced presenters from diverse backgrounds, including pediatric dentistry, prosthodontics, mobile dental care, behavior management, and parent advocacy, offering a rich and interdisciplinary perspective on patient care. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based, patient-centered strategies to improve communication, care delivery, and treatment outcomes.
Course Objectives
Identify common oral health challenges associated with aging and patients with special health care needs.
Demonstrate enhanced empathy and understanding of cognitive, sensory, and physical impairments through experiential and virtual reality simulations.
Apply patient-centered, inclusive communication and clinical strategies to improve care outcomes for patients with SHCN.
