The Larry Hayes First Amendment Forum is a free event for the public in the theater of the Allen County Public Library main branch. Its title honors the memory of Larry Hayes, former editorial page editor of The Journal Gazette, who was a tireless champion of our First Amendment rights under the Constitution. You will hear from three impressive speakers and four local leaders who will participate in the forum.
Sheila, Seuss, Kennedy, JD, was a professor of Law and Public Policy at IU, and is a prolific author and blogger with a large following. Her topic will be the impact of Christian nationalism on all of our First Amendment rights.
Daniel W. Ulrich, PhD is Wieand Professor of New Testament Studies at Bethany, Theological Seminary in Richmond, Indiana. As a biblical scholar, Dan will make the case that Christian nationalism is a distortion of Jesus’s teachings that damages the rest of the religious community.
Moises Serrano, the Media Relations Manager at Americans United for Separation of Church and State, will speak about how AU is fighting back against White Christian nationalism today.
The forum will conclude with a diverse four-persono panel of local advocates: Dr. Jacqueline , King, CEO, Black Women Empowered; Laurie Gray, JD, Socratic Parenting, LLC; Dr. Steve Carr, Director, Institute of Holocaust and Genocide, PFW; Zach Parrish, cofounder, Secular Education Association.
The panel members will share the real life impact of Christian nationalism on their spheres, as well as possible actions to counter Christian nationalism .
