Unbelievable by Bishop John Shelby Spong
Why Neither Ancient Creeds Nor the Reformation Can Produce a Living Faith Today
Bishop John Spong was an Episcopal minister who rose through the ranks and became a world-renowned Biblical scholar and teacher. He feels that Christianity must change or die. According to him: the problem is that "Christianity, having recorded its first-century explanations of the Jesus experience in scripture, and its fourth-century explanations in creedal statements, then proceeded to make excessive claims for authority of those explanations, essentially freezing them into their first-and fourth-century frames of reference. Literalized words are always doomed words since our perception of truth is constantly expanding and changing." He references Martin Luther's reformation theses that were nailed to the church door in 1517. He posts in this book "a call for a new reformation", framing that call in the form of twelve theses he has developed.
