About the event

Volunteer to be a Broward County Library Literacy Tutor
Broward County Library is seeking potential volunteers for the Each One Teach One Literacy program. Join us for a Volunteer Recruitment Drive from 1 to 5PM on Monday, September 8 at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC), 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311, 954-357-6282.

On September 8, International Literacy Day, the library is looking for adults aged 18 and over in Central Broward County to teach adults how to read and write through the Each One Teach One literacy program. Staff are looking forward to describing the process, answering questions and helping future volunteers complete applications.

Volunteer tutors teach adults to read and write using the phonics-based program, Laubach Way to Reading. Books are provided for volunteer tutors and students at no cost. The requirements for volunteer tutors are simply to participate in online tutor training and commit one year to an adult student.

Teaching adults in the community to read and write is a vital need. One in five adults in Broward read at level 1 and struggle with basic reading and writing skills. Teaching someone to read enhances every area of that person's life, including their ability to provide for themselves and their family.

Each One Teach One operates year-round, accepting applications from students and potential volunteer tutors. There is currently a waitlist of 10 students in the area who are eager to get started with their reading journey.

For additional information about becoming a volunteer tutor, or if you know an adult who is struggling with reading and writing, please contact us at 954-357-6230 or bGVhcm5pbmdzZXJ2aWNlcyB8IGJyb3dhcmQgISBvcmc=.
