About the event

expanded cinema vol. 2
expanded cinema vol. 2:
tetsuya maruyama + esth fantuzzi & priss niinikoski + els van riel + adina ionescu-muscel

expanded cinema nights is a series of cinematic performances experiencing mostly analog moving image with sound in space. these works present different materials and techniques, works in progress or adaptations in the space, for instance.
these series are made in collaboration between les ateliers claus and LABO BxL.

for this second edition - two floors will be open to the public. - reserve your spot.

expanded cinema night vol2

tetsuya maruyama will present: pedra e montanha, a durational performance of about 30min with 35mm slides, 16mm film and a shutter.

Pedra e Montanha
this project is my on-going research on contemporary mining activity and its holistic implications mainly in brazil, but also found on a global scale in various segments, from construction industry to electronic device fabrication. I would like to define mining as any activity related to extracting mineral materials from the earth, be it iron, petroleum, lithium, among other minerals such as salt, lead, sulphur, tartaric acid, sulphuric acid, silver, water. a search for battery materials has grown in recent times since the appearance of a hyper-connected society with smartphones and computers. through raw and violent images of mineral extraction provided by mbr (assembled brazilian mining), pedra e montanha aims to propose a non-human gaze at current mining relations and their environmental impact on our planet.

tetsuya maruyama (yokohama, 1983) is an artist whose transdisciplinary practice encompasses film, text, performance, sound, ideas, installations, and so on (not necessarily in that order). his work re-contextualizes found, banal materials and textures as a liminal record of everyday observations. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the university at buffalo (2007) and a master's in visual languages from school of fine art at rio de janeiro federal university(2024). as an independent programmer and researcher, he has presented brazilian experimental film programs in the usa, argentina, brazil, japan, and canada. he is the founder of megalab, a laboratory for artist-created cinema in rio de janeiro. his works are distributed by lightcone.

esth fantuzzi & priss niinikoski
the performance, developed collaboratively by visual artist esth fantuzzi and sound artist priss niinikoski, is an expanded-cinema piece that combines 16 mm projection with tape sound and live performance. we explore diffraction, self-representation, and transformation through analogue images, voices, and projected light.

esth uses two 16 mm projectors and reflective surfaces, such as mirrors or glass, to form shifting projection zones where images fragment, duplicate, and interfere. priss works with two cassette loops: she records our voices live and plays them back, allowing them to echo, overlap, distort, and shift in pitch and rhythm. the voice gradually loses its speech qualities, sometimes dissolving, sometimes returning and overlapping. by manipulating tape speed, looping, and feedback, we create a sound space in which the voice stretches, slows down, fades, or is overwritten. this mirrors the visual fragmentation: older film materials projected in the present moment no longer align with the performing body, creating a temporal dissonance.

themes of identity, dysphoria, and the instability of self-image emerge from this work: voice and image are not fixed but diffuse, refract, and reassemble. through this process of diffraction, in light, sound, and narrative, the piece moves between presence and disappearance, generating an environment in which the audience is free to move and explore overlapping zones of projection and sound, experiencing the loops of voice and light in relation.

Installations in the main floor & studio by els van riel and adina ionescu-muscel, members of labo bxL

els van riel presents: five screens - berlin '07

five screens is a series of installations using 16mm film loops showing moving black and white abstract linear compositions. the movement of black lines and white surfaces on five separate screens creates a visual choreography revealing ever-changing chance patterns.

i was wondering if I could create one panoramic landscape out of images taken at different moments. In other words, what happens if I put moving images that follow each other up in time next to each other in one space?

to avoid overlapping in the 3-dimensional depth of two photographed landscapes, I filmed five flat film screens positioned next to each other using a travelling 16mm-camera. In a first installation this travelling image was copied five times and projected using the same five projectors in a row which throw the moving image of the five passing screens onto the five fixed screens. (brussels, 2005). this installation was once more filmed using a travelling camera. I added a circular screen, copied this film again five times to set up a second installation. (brussels, 2006)

to continue, one of these images was filmed again, this time in combination with the lines of a vertical grid and a moving spotlight to result in a third installation (Berlin, 2007). for a 'almost cinema' exhibition (Gent, 2007) i was asked to adapt the same installation for a more spacious room.

and perhaps in this set-up, I was indeed able to make that new physical space out of images taken in different times.

here and now in 2026, we will see what happens when I project this final installation through the grid of les atelier Claus' staircase. can we make the staircase move?
