About the event

WethePeopleWeds: Chana Rothman & Lindsey Shapiro
This week we'll begin by inviting Chana Rothman is a Philadelphia-based singer/songwriter, musical community organizer, and educator whose work blends folk, world beat, and hip-hop to break down barriers and spark change. After moving from Brooklyn to Mount Airy and starting her family, she rooted herself in the local arts scene, releasing her album Beautiful Land (produced by Grammy winner C Lanzbom) with sold-out neighborhood concerts covered by WHYY. In addition to her performance career, Rothman writes original songs for youth through the Foundation for Jewish Camp, creating bilingual, community-sung pieces shared at summer camps across North America. Her interactive and down-to-earth style has been shaped by years of songleading and has brought her to major stages, including the Telluride Bluegrass Festival (Troubadour Competition finalist), the NorthEast Regional Folk Alliance (Emerging Artist Showcase), and venues from Philadelphia’s World Café Live to international workshops in Europe, Israel, and South Africa. She has been featured on WFUV’s Sunday Breakfast, John Platt’s On Your Radar, and Philadelphia’s WXPN, and continues to curate folk music concerts in her community.

Next, we're excited to present Lindsey Shapiro, a vegetable farmer from Bally, Pennsylvania, where she lives and works at Root Mass Farm. Shapiro is a first-generation farmer who discovered her passion for agriculture while helping her husband’s family on their urban farm in Philadelphia. Inspired by their experience, Shapiro and her husband started their own operation, Root Mass Farm, in 2011, where they grow a variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs using sustainable farming practices. Root Mass Farm sells at two farmers markets and offers a Garden Stake CSA. Having customers come to the farmers market for their CSA shares also allows Shapiro to interact with them on a more personal level and answer questions they might have about her produce. At her off-farm job at Pasa, Shapiro works to get farmers involved in the Farm Bill reauthorization process. She stresses the importance of making sure farmers’ voices are being heard in spaces where decisions are being made that will affect agriculture. who joined Pasa to organize farmers around the 2023 Farm Bill reauthorization. She works to amplify farmers’ voices and advocate for policies that support regenerative practices. When not talking to farmers, Lindsey is usually farming with her husband Landon and playing two-player Tetris on an original Super Nintendo after their daughters go to bed.

As always, we'll have a action item as well as our usual list of hopeful news, much needed in these dismal days.

Be sure to grab a drink or snack from the remarkably wonderful High Point Cafe, who give our community a home.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
Margaret Mead
