Info: In today’s schools and helping professions, counselors are increasingly called to respond to complex student behaviors, trauma histories, emotional dysregulation, and neurodevelopmental differences. This session explores how a neuroscience-informed perspective can strengthen ethical decision-making by shifting our approach from judgment to regulation, from compliance to connection, and from punishment to support.
Participants will examine how brain-based understanding impacts core ethical responsibilities such as dignity, compassion, equity, confidentiality, and appropriate intervention. Practical strategies will be shared for supporting children while also educating the adults around them including teachers, caregivers, and systems so that responses remain both clinically sound and ethically grounded.
Info: This session will explore the relevant ACA and NBCC guidelines for remote (telehealth) psychotherapy and introduce case studies where such guidelines may create ethical conflict. We will pay special attention to what happens when clients or counselors travel out of state, and what to do when state law encumbers the therapeutic process.
Info: Lunch is from Firehouse Subs
Info: This training provides an overview of the ethical principles and professional responsibilities involved in supporting the mental health of infants and young children. It will define infant and early childhood mental health and discuss efforts being provided statewide. This training emphasizes the unique vulnerability of this population, the importance of nurturing the caregiver/child relationships, and the role of relational health in practice. Key topics will include dual responsibility, confidentiality, self-care, and reflective practice. By the end, participants gain practical strategies for making ethically sound decisions that protect infants’ developmental needs while fostering trust and collaboration with families.
Info: This workshop focuses on ethical decision-making at the intersection of professional ethics, personal values, and multicultural competence. Grounded in the ACA's Code of Ethics (2014), the session utilizes the Forester-Miller & Davis (2016) Ethical Decision-Making Model as the primary framework for analyzing values-based ethical dilemmas. Particular attention is given to situations in which counselors’ personal, religious, or cultural values may conflict with those of clients, students, or institutions.
Participants will receive a brief overview of the Forester-Miller & Davis model, with explicit integration of cultural humility, power, and contextual factors at each step of the decision-making process. Through examination of well-known legal and ethical cases from counseling education and practice, as well as guided small- and large-group discussions, participants will apply the model to ethically complex scenarios involving multicultural considerations and values conflicts.
