Artist's Statement
My artistic journey has evolved from simple abstracts to contemporary scenes inspired by nature that are presented in abstract ways. In recent years I began quilting as a hobby and have subsequently donated numerous “comfort” quilts. I gravitate to modern designs but because I often use fabrics that are donated, I enjoy the challenge of finding or creating designs with the restriction of using what I have been given and augmenting with fabrics that I choose.

My love of sewing and quilting has inspired me to create my own art quilt designs. It is certainly a gratifying journey. This show is my first foray into the realm of art quilting and this is evident in the scope of pieces I have created; of course I have explored many ideas! I have curated the collection into groupings that hang well together. My love of the outdoors has inspired forest and mountain scenes and my love of abstract is evident in a series of dramatic modern pieces. I have also experimented with fabric using alcohol ink and traditional dyes to create compelling results. This exhibition is an exploration of the fascinating things that can be done using fabric, thread and imagination to showcase striking pieces of art. I am excited to share a new direction of my creative process with visitors to the Arts Station.

Artist Bio
My background incudes diplomas in Fashion Design and Interior Design. Prior to retiring in Fernie I owned an exclusive women’s wear store for over thirty years. Graphic design, interior design, display and merchandising have always been part of my life. Outdoor pursuits such as hiking, mountain biking and skiing along with crafting, quilting and sewing have all contributed to my becoming an artist.

I began with simple modern abstracts and my journey continued to include acrylic on canvas, pen and ink, alcohol ink, watercolour and mixed media. I am inspired by simple pieces of art in more subtle colour palettes that are created in a contemporary way. The mountains, lakes, trees and forests all speak to me and have a vital influence on my art. I like to take an idea of an image inspired by nature and then recreate it in a more abstract, simplified form.

In recent years, quilting has become a new hobby that I love and I am a member of the Fernie Quilters Guild. From this I have combined sewing with my art and “art quilting” has become my latest endeavour.
