About the event

Lecture Series: Victor Hugo
Eileen M. Angelini, Ph.D., Fulbright Scholar and Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques, will present "Victor Hugo: The Man behind Les Misérables". French poet, novelist, and dramatist Victor Hugo’s life story, with spectacular shifts in status and fortune, is in some ways not so different from that of his Les Miserables hero, Jean Valjean. At the age of 29, the publication of The Hunchback of Notre Dame made him famous around Europe, but his personal life was beset with tragedy and drama. After Napoleon’s fall in 1870, and the huge success of Les Misérables, Hugo returned to Paris as a people's hero. When he died in 1885, two million people joined his funeral procession.
