Crafting "Windows to the Soul": A Look at the Uncanny Art of Making Artificial Eyes

When professional eye-makers (called ocularists) really succeed, no one knows their work. The eyes they handcraft and hand-paint have the expressive power of real eyes. This talk will explore the little-known world of ocularistry, a world devoted to the physical, psychological, and emotional healing of anyone who has suffered the very visible trauma of eye loss and the almost inevitable subsequent struggle for full human connection. It will show how the making of prosthetic eyes remains much the same as it's been for two centuries--with eyes crafted meticulously and individually, with ocularists learning their trade through long apprenticeships--but how it may also be facing, with the emergence of AI and 3D printing, one of its most fundamental evolutions in many decades.



This event is hosted by Dan Roche, the author of "Eyes by Hand: Prosthetics of Art and Healing," newly published by MIT Press. He lives in Fayetteville and directs the Creative Writing Program at Le Moyne College.
