Step back into the early 19th century and discover the story of the longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) — once covering over 90 million acres in the Southeast and essential to North Carolina’s landscape, economy, and culture. This towering pine shaped livelihoods through the naval stores industry, provided materials for Native American crafts, and supported unique ecosystems maintained by frequent fires.
