Randy Edelman is an American composer who has left his mark on both the music industry and Hollywood. Born in 1947, his musical journey began on the East Coast.
Playing piano by ear at a young age, Randy started composing by age 14. He transitioned from performing to songwriting in the 1970s, producing solo albums and writing songs picked up by artists like The Carpenters, Barry Manilow, and Dionne Warwick.
Moving to Los Angeles and beginning composing for film and television in the 1980s, Randy gained recognition for his work in comedy films like “Kindergarten Cop,” “Twins,” and “The Mask.”
Collaborating with renowned director Ivan Reitman on numerous projects, Randy is also known for dramatic scores, including the iconic music for “The Last of the Mohicans” (co-composed with Trevor Jones).
Earning prestigious nominations like Golden Globes and BAFTAs as well as receiving twelve BMI Awards and an honorary doctorate in Fine Arts. His main theme composed for DragonHeart (1996) and Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993) was heavily used in movie trailers, at the end of the 90s. Several of the themes from his score for Gettysburg (1993) (e.g. “Fife and Gun”) are used frequently in various film trailers and television programing, particularly sports coverage.
His theme from The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. (1993) was used in coverage of the Olympics in 2002, and again by NBC during its coverage of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.
Randy Edelman’s diverse filmography showcases his ability to create memorable music across genres. His contributions continue to be enjoyed by audiences worldwide.
