Join us for a weekend immersion in some of the most fabled water in the country–the Okefenokee Swamp and the Suwannee River…don’t worry, it’s a figurative immersion; we won’t let the gators get you! Truth is, the alligators of the swamp and Suwannee avoid people and pose no harm. But, you will see lots of them, along with loads of other wildlife–from a host of birds to raccoons and even bears.
This two-day journey starts at Stephen Foster State Park and ventures through the Suwannee River Narrows, through the manmade Suwannee River Sill and into the Suwannee River proper, covering some eight miles of classic swamp paddling. Day two takes in another 14 miles of the Suwannee River as it winds beneath towering cypress and gnarled tupelo trees on its way to Fargo.
Off river, we tentatively plan to camp at Griffis Fish Camp, an old-school fish camp that has been serving Okefenokee Swamp visitors since the 1930s. Changes in ownership and management of the camp may force us to alter plans for camping. Nightly activities will include entertainment and education programs highlighting the area’s cultural and natural heritage.
Registration fees include guide services and maps, shuttle services, campsite, six catered meals and education programs. Rental boats may be reserved during registration. REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT WILL OPEN IN EARLY JULY.
Skill Level Required: This is a flatwater paddle suitable for beginners and novices.
