Pruning Demonstration

Pruning is one of the major types of orchard care and is first done in late winter/early spring before the trees break dormancy. .Join us at the Fairfield Community Orchard to start the season with
dormant fruit tree pruning.

Pruning will remove broken branches and thin the canopy, making space for new growth and better fruit development. Proper pruning is essential and it is a skill learned over many seasons by working with many trees.
This demonstration will present the basics of winter pruning. Participants will be able to practice some basic cuts.

 What to look for to enhance the health of the fruit trees.
 How to properly choose which branches to remove.
 What different stages of growth look like.
 How to identify different types of dormant buds.
 How to select shoots of new growth for grafting.
