This presentation will provide an in-depth examination of professional ethics as they relate to the practice of engineering. It will begin with an introduction to the fundamental principles of ethics and their essential role in the engineering profession. The discussion will address the connection between ethics and qualifications for licensure, emphasizing issues of public safety, health, professional liability, continuing education, and claim avoidance. The presentation will also review litigation considerations, including who may assert claims against engineers, applicable standards of care, and associated costs. Participants will gain an understanding of the multiple sources of professional ethics—ranging from personal and societal norms to statutory regulations, professional codes, client requirements, and licensing board decisions. The session will outline key statutes and regulations administered by the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors and highlight the ethical standards established by public entities, private organizations, and professional societies. A detailed review of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Code of Ethics will be included, with emphasis on responsibilities to society, the environment, the profession, clients, and peers. The presentation will further address common conflicts of interest, disciplinary actions, and approaches for effectively resolving ethical dilemmas. The program will conclude with an examination of the ethical implications of artificial intelligence in civil engineering, referencing relevant policy statements from ASCE, NSPE, and ACEC, supported by real-world examples and case studies.
This presentation pending approval for 2 Ethics PDH for New Jersey and New York.
