HISTORY:
In 1992 the Oklahoma Legislature passed H.B. 2227 which directed the Oklahoma Conservation Commission to coordinate environmental education in the state. In response to this legislation, the Conservation Commission called a meeting of state agencies that were involved in environmental issues and environmental education. This became the Oklahoma Environmental Education Coordinating Committee.
WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION:
"Environmental education (EE) is a process that helps individuals, communities, and organizations learn more about the environment, and develop skills and understanding about how to address global challenges. It has the power to transform lives and society. It informs and inspires. It influences attitudes. It motivates action" (North American Association for Environmental Education).
