It is unlawful to transport live swine on a public road or waterway within the State unless the swine have an official form of identification approved by the Sate Veterinatrian and are transported in such a way that the swine is visible. Live swine transported without identification are presumed to have been taken from the wild and are in violoation of Section 5-16-25 Effective May 17, 2021.
This legislative rule means ALL DOMESTIC SWINE moving in South Carolina roads must have an approved ID tag. The South Carolina Veterinarian has listed Official USDA Identification as the approved form of identification for swine. Official USDA Identification has the SU Shield and a nationally unique identification number. The two forms of Official USDA Identification are Trite Tags or 840 electronic ID tags. All pigs enrolled in the project must be tagged before being transported.
Should anyone wish to read the entire rule, see Title 47, Chapter 4 using this link:

For questions specific to this new law, contact Brian Beer YmJlZXIgfCBjbGVtc29uICEgZWR1. We will be assisting families who obtain their own pig with this tagging system. Pigs purchased through Clemson wil be tagged appropriately.
