Play Synopsis:
It's the 1950's and new colors are being added to the Red Scare. Two US State Department employees, Bob and Norma, are being tasked with identifying sexual deviants within their ranks. There’s just one problem, Bob and Norma are both gay and are married to each other’s partners as a carefully constructed cover. Inspired by a true story. Laughter gives way to provocative drama as two couples are forced to stare down the closet door.
Characters:
The cast is made up of 7 actors, 3 male and 4 female. The ages will depend on what works best for the ensemble but they should be old enough to be well established in their careers and young enough to still be working.
Bob Martindale- A WWII Vet. Reserved, bookish but a solid man’s man.
Millie Martindale- Bob’s wife. Play “ditzy wife” when other people are around. Actually, quick-witted and observant.
Norma Baxter- Knowing, efficient, classy. A secretary at the State Department. Wise woman who is great with a wisecrack.
Joe Baxter- Norma’s husband. A prankster, ready with a comeback. A high school teacher with a lot of energy.
Theodore Sunderson- The boss. Bombastic, loud, overbearing. A patriotic windbag.
Kitty Sunderson- Ted’s wife, legitimately ditzy. Very sweet and genuine just doesn’t “get it.”
Barbara Grant- A formidable opponent, no nonsense, beautiful, brilliant. A little scary.
*Several characters have to be comfortable with intimacy moments within the text. There is intimacy between both homo/heterosexual relationships. There will be an intimacy coordinator for Perfect Arrangement.*
