About the event

"Cahokia Mounds: An Evolution of Culture, Preservation, & Interpretation of America's First City"
Join presenter Bill Iseminger for his talk entitled "Cahokia Mounds:
An Evolution of Culture, Preservation, and Interpretation of America's First City."

Chicago Archaeological Society (CAS) meetings are free and open to all. Our talks take place at the Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave, Evanston, IL. Doors for our meeting open at 2pm and each monthly presentation gets underway at 2:30pm.

We are especially excited to begin our new CAS season with Iseminger talking about the ancient metropolis of Cahokia, which is now a World Heritage Site, yet as the crow flies, it is only about 260 miles from Chicago. In this presentation, Iseminger will discuss the cultural traditions that preceded the magnificent site of Cahokia, the major features of the Cahokia site, the long efforts of site preservation, and the site interpretations that ultimately led to its classification as a World Heritage Site, and the development of the new Cahokia interpretive center.

More about Bill Iseminger: As an archaeologist, he worked for five decades at Cahokia Mounds, and "retired" in 2019. He directed archaeological field schools at several locations on the site and served as assistant manager in charge of interpretation, exhibits, public relations, and the intern program. He is the author of the book "Cahokia Mounds: America's First City" and is the author/illustrator of "Identifying and Understanding Artifacts of Illinois and Neighboring States, which is a special issue of the journal "Rediscovery" published by the Illinois Association for Advancement of Archaeology (IAAA). Iseminger serves as journal editor for IAAA. The recent (2024) issue of "Rediscovery" featured his article, "Rediscovering Illinois Archaeology: The Beginnings-1800s to 1960s." He is also coauthor of the article "Investigations into Cahokia's Mound 1." Bill and his wife, Gloria, live in Columbia, Illinois.

If you can't join us in person, CAS offers remote access via Facebook Live. Or join us via Zoom Webinar (beginning at 2:15pm):
