What is the meaning of TNR?
TNR stands for Trap-Neuter-Return, a humane method of managing free-roaming cat populations. It involves trapping community cats, surgically altering them (spaying or neutering), and then returning them to their original territory. This process helps control cat populations by preventing breeding and reduces the need for shelters to handle large numbers of strays.
Trap: Cats are humanely trapped using specialized cages or traps.
Neuter: The trapped cats are taken to spay/neuter clinic to be sterilized and vaccinated against rabies.
Return: After recovery, the cats are returned to the area where they were trapped.
Ear Tipping (a small piece of ear cartilage - generally left ear - is removed) is done as a visible indicator that thecat has been neutered and vaccinated.
TNR is an effective approach because it prevents the breeding cycle, reduces the number of strays in a community and improves the overall welfare of the cats.
