CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
(most characters must have a Southern Accent unless otherwise specified)
BLANCHE DUBOIS
(Female-presenting / early-30s) A sensitive, delicate, moth-like member of the fading Southern aristocracy. She has lost the family’s plantation home, and has undergone a significant trauma, and as a result is largely unable to face the harsh realities of the world she finds herself in. Desperate for human connection and security, often romanticizing her circumstances as a way to escape her fears of being alone and destitute. At her worst, she is delusional, cruel, and detached from reality. At her best, she is able to see the potential for beauty in the world, and to fight for the reality she desires.
STELLA KOWALSKI
(Female-presenting / mid-20s) Blanche’s younger sister, married to Stanley Kowalski, and living in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Full of passion and excitement for life, she is madly in love with her husband, although sometimes a bit frightened by the passion she feels for him. Comes from a wealthy family in Mississippi, but is happy with the working class life she lives with Stanley. She has always been a realist, particularly in her relationship with her sister Blanche, and prefers to find happiness in the world as it is, rather than as she wishes it might be. She is pregnant with their first child throughout the play.
STANLEY KOWALSKI
(Male-presenting / late-20s-40) A hardworking man who loves his wife Stella more than he’s ever loved anyone else. His affection for her is often at odds with his crass and confidant behavior. Working-class and proud of the life he provides for Stella. He is a realist and prefers to discuss things as they are, with particular attention to any injustices he perceives against him or his family. Isn’t shy about his sexual desire for Stella, and enjoys her desire for him. He is a heavy drinker, using alcohol to mask his insecurities. Uses his masculinity as a shield against a world that he feels he might not belong in, which often results in violent outbursts. Sees Blanche as a threat to his stability with Stella, that she might remind Stella of her finer former life. Uses his sex and desire as weapons in what he perceives to be a battle for Stella’s affection.
HAROLD (MITCH) MITCHELL
(Male-presenting / mid-20s- 40s) A shy, reserved friend of Stanley’s who often visits the Kowalski house for poker nights. Lives with his sick mother, and loves her dearly. He is a lonely man, hungry for both physical and emotional intimacy like that he sees between Stella & Stanley, but fears his demeanor & physical appearance might prevent him from making meaningful connections. He begins a courtship with Blanche.
EUNICE HUBBELL
(Female-presenting / 30s-50s) Stella & Stanley’s upstairs neighbor. Married to Steve Hubbell, and enjoys neighborhood gossip and poking fun at her husband. Helps Stella when Stanley hurts her, and is appalled at the physical violence Stanley exhibits. A keen observer and a realist. (May double roles.)
STEVE HUBBELL
(Male-presenting / 30s-50s)
Eunice’s husband and one of Stanley’s best friends. Crass and loud, but with genuine affection for his wife (shown in playful & performative criticisms of her). Looks up to Stanley and emulates his behavior, including his occasional violent outbursts. (May double roles.)
PABLO GONZALES
(Male-presenting / 20s-50s) A coworker of Stanley, Mitch, & Steve. Plays poker at Stanley’s house, and seems genuinely disturbed by the violence he witnesses there. (May double roles.)
NEIGHBORHOOD WOMAN
(Female-presenting / any age) Combining two of the roles in the original script, this actor will play both the “Neighborhood Woman” in the beginning of the play, and the “Flower Seller” at the end. (May double roles.)
DOCTOR
(Male-presenting / ANY) The head doctor of the mental institution to which Blanche is committed at the end of the play. Brusque, businesslike, although not without compassion for his patients. (May double roles.)
NURSE
(Female-presenting / ANY) A nurse from the mental institution that Blanche is committed to at the end of the play. Detached, businesslike, unsympathetic to Blanche’s struggles. (May double roles.)
NEWSPAPER COLLECTOR
(Male-presenting / 20s) Visits the home of Stella & Stanley in one scene and meets Blanche, who in the grip of delusion, mistakes him for her deceased husband. Will have one kiss with Blanche. (May double roles.)
List of probable Intimacy Content:
Affectionate moments (kisses, caresses, etc.) between Stanley & Stella
Embraces between Stella & Blanche
A single kiss between Blanche & the Newspaper Collector
Minor intimate contact (hand-holds, embraces, etc.) between Blanche & Mitch
The leadup to an unstaged sexual assault between Stanley & Blanche
