This month's volunteer meeting will be held on Monday, March 9th, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Coffee, light refreshments, and snacks will be provided while we watch "The Domain of the Calusa." This award-winning documentary, created by the Florida Museum of Natural History in 1995, explores Calusa culture, archaeology, and Spanish contact.
Here's a quick overview of the film's key sections:
* **Randell Research Center/Pineland:** Focuses on the major Calusa site in Pine Island, FL.
* **Key Marco Artifacts:** Follows the 1896 excavation of remarkable Calusa artifacts.
* **Coastal Ecosystem Mastery:** Explores how they thrived without agriculture through fishing/trading.
* **Archaeological Insights:** Features modern researchers reconstructing Calusa history and environment.
Understanding the Calusa people's history and their sustainable practices in this region is crucial. By learning how they thrived, we can gain valuable insights into responsible stewardship of our local ecosystems and become better caretakers of the environment they once called home.
Following the documentary, we will discuss upcoming volunteer opportunities. Advance registration is required.
