It’s that time of year when the sap begins to rise. And humans aren’t the only ones drawn to the sweetness of maple trees. The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker depends on sapwells—neat rows of shallow holes drilled into tree bark—where it laps up sugary sap along with insects caught in the sticky flow. Since 1970, more than 3 billion birds have been lost in North America. Fortunately, maple sugarbushes like those at Aullwood provide critical nesting habitat for a wide variety of songbirds. Maple syrup season is the perfect time to join us for a Sugarbush Tour. Learn how trees make their own food, see how sap is transformed into syrup, and enjoy a taste of real maple syrup. You’ll also discover our Bird-Friendly Sugarbush Management Program, which helps landowners manage their sugarbushes in ways that support woodland birds—while giving them the opportunity to market certified Bird-Friendly maple syrup.
